The Stage
OK, I confess, I'm addicted to tech. No degree of self-chastising, time-limitations or app-deletions seems to shield me from the temptation of easy answers, instant gratification, entertainment, and distraction. Research shows I am not alone. Modern toxic interactions with digital platforms like binge-watching, doomscrolling, and cognitive offloading overpower the human mind. Our online habits dysregulate our nervous systems, they impair our memory and concentration, and undermine our emotional regulation, confidence and decision-making capability (e.g. Wilmer, 2017; Kosmyna, 2025). Big Tech seemsto be on a mission to transform us all into mentally dependent consumers. The diagnosis looks grim, but the remedies are pretty clear and there is also ample ground for hope.
Remedy 1: Regulate Addictive Design
To counteract the addictive nature of digital platforms, we can draw parallels with narcotics. Algorithms with neurological impacts comparable to those ofaddictive substances should be subject to similar restrictions. Currentlegislation like the EU AI Act and the Digital Services Act (DSA) fall short todo this, so additional reform is needed. Addictive design can be targeted by bringing together health agencies, legislators and regulators to access the harm, identify root causes, and compose and enforce protective laws to fine orban harmful practices.
Remedy 2: Restrain the Owners
The concentration of wealth has undermined democracy time and again throughout history. Campaign donations, media ownership, and corporate lobbying are placing the personal gain of a few above our well-being. To ensure technology serves humanity, we must hold the beneficial owners accountable. This means disclosure of benefits, expanding legal responsibility for societal harm, limiting the influence of money in politics, and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share. Socially, we should honor ethical leadership and hold abusers to account.
Remedy 3: Cultivate Self-Control
The ancient discipline of self-mastery remains as relevant as ever. Many societal problems stem from unchecked human lust, anger, and greed. Online interactions become toxic when platforms exploit these urges. This also means they hold no power over those who can resist their offerings. Introducing daily mindfulness practices in schools and offices can strengthen concentration, awareness andemotional regulation. True value arises from clarity, not drive alone (see also Bedard, 2026).
Toward Global Balance
With the seremedies we can take back control and focus on elevating the quality of life. The synergy between human creativity and advanced technology holds immense promise. An empowered, healthy, and collaborative population can achieve meaningful change: ending hunger, disease, war and the ecological collapse within this century. This requires harmonizing our mindsets, governance research, production, and diplomacy with a multicultural and bio-diverse world.
Join the Shift
Aspreviously argued by my colleague in his blog (Keuchenius, 2023) we encourage creative, transparent and active use of technology. We all yearn for comfort, but fitness comes from exercise. So take a breath, challenge your digital dependency and commit to healthy habits. Take hourly breaks, take a walk, leave your screen, play music, enjoy a game, observe nature, ground yourself and connect with others. With such breaks, we renew trust in our senses and we canre-engage with technology responsibly. Be honest about what matters most, playful in your approach, and practice dedicated focus (see also Oliver, 2024).Take the lead and let AI challenge and inspire your creativity, social interaction, and development. Such mindful, structured and reciprocal use of technology can help us solve daily problems, foster personal growth, and strengthen our communities.
At Y.digital
We reflect and ask why. Why burn the world for a vain race to some uncertain future artificial general intelligence? We need practical solutions for societal challenges here and now. We need ethical, reliable, sustainable and sovereign technology, that puts humans first. That is why we help organizations with human-centered innovations that make meaningful societal impact. We safeguard operational knowledge, modernize workflows, empower employees, embed ethical principles, and provide transparency, insight, control and sovereignty.
